The state of AI hiring in Europe is one of rapid growth constrained by a shortage of experienced talent, so demand is strong but concentrated at the senior end.
The demand signal is unambiguous in the large datasets. Lightcast, in its Beyond the Buzz analysis of 1.3 billion postings, tracked unique postings for generative AI skills rising from 55 in January 2021 to nearly 10,000 by May 2025. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 ranks AI and machine learning specialists among the fastest-growing roles of the decade. The constraint is supply: there are not enough experienced practitioners to fill the roles being created.
That supply gap is the single most important fact about the market. It explains why pay has stayed high while parts of the wider tech sector cooled, why employers reach for senior hires who need no training, and why a candidate who can genuinely do the work holds a strong hand despite fierce competition for the visible roles. A market short of a specific skill behaves differently from a saturated one, and European AI hiring is firmly in the former state.

The demand for AI talent in Europe spans every function, not just engineering, which is one of the clearest signs the market has matured.
Engineering is the largest single function, but it is a minority of the market. Sales and go-to-market, strategy and operations, product, and other functions together account for more roles than engineering alone. Our European sample shows the same shape: 678 live roles trace to only 97 companies, with a small group of frontier labs, scale-ups, and consultancies accounting for most of them. The market is broad in the kinds of roles it offers and narrow in who is offering them.

The European AI market is tilted toward both senior and remote roles, which shapes who can realistically enter it and from where.
Two figures from the current sample stand out. Senior, staff, principal, and lead roles make up 37% of live listings, a reflection of the experience shortage and employers’ preference for people who can deliver without ramp-up. And 68% of roles are fully remote, well above the wider economy, because AI work is screen-based and the talent is distributed. Indeed’s Hiring Lab has separately found that most recent growth in software postings came from senior roles, and AI mirrors that skew.

For jobseekers, the openings are plentiful but concentrated and senior-tilted, so the winning approach is to build demonstrable applied skills, target the active employers directly, and consider the many non-engineering AI roles. For employers, the shortage of senior talent and the remote tilt mean that insisting on office attendance or narrow credentials shrinks an already thin pool. The market rewards those who can be specific: candidates who show applied skill, and employers who hire on it.
The two sides of the market are also converging on the same answer. Candidates who can prove they ship, and employers willing to hire on that proof rather than on pedigree, meet in the middle and both do better. The friction in the current market comes from the gap between the demand for applied AI skill and the still-thin supply of people who can demonstrate it, so anything that closes that gap, a strong portfolio on one side or a skills-based process on the other, is where the advantage lies. That is likely to remain the shape of European AI hiring until the supply of experienced practitioners catches up with the roles being created, which will take years rather than months.
