AI hiring in Europe is concentrated in a small group of frontier labs, fast-growing scale-ups, and AI consultancies rather than spread evenly across the market. A handful of names account for a large share of the openings at any moment. We analysed 678 live AI roles from 97 companies hiring across Europe to see who is most active, and set it against external data on how concentrated AI hiring has become.
The pattern that matters most is concentration. Most AI hiring comes from very few employers, which shapes where the real opportunities actually are.
How concentrated is AI hiring?
AI hiring is highly concentrated, with a small fraction of companies responsible for most of the demand, according to large-scale analysis of job postings.
The clearest measure comes from the United States, where the data runs deepest. Indeed’s Hiring Lab found that, as of late 2025, almost 90% of all AI-related job postings came from just 1% of companies. AI adoption is spreading, but the hiring is still dominated by a narrow band of firms investing heavily, and the European picture rhymes with it.
Our own sample shows the same shape at a smaller scale. Across 678 live European AI roles, the openings trace back to only 97 companies, and the most active dozen account for a large share of them. That is a market where the identity of the employer matters more than in most fields, because so few of them are doing most of the hiring, and each one has a distinct focus and hiring rhythm worth understanding before you apply.
Which companies are hiring the most AI talent in Europe?
The companies hiring the most AI talent in Europe are a mix of frontier model labs, applied-AI scale-ups, and consultancies scaling AI practices, based on our current sample of live roles.
The names cluster into recognisable types. Frontier and applied labs such as ElevenLabs, OpenAI, Cohere, and Synthesia hire for building and shipping models. Consultancies such as Devoteam scale AI delivery across client projects. Enterprise scale-ups such as Celonis and Harvey build AI into specific industries. A jobseeker gets more signal from these categories than from the exact ranking, because the leaders sit within a few roles of each other and the counts shift week to week.
Why is AI hiring so concentrated?
AI hiring is concentrated because the work requires capital, data, and scarce talent that only a small number of firms currently command.
Training and serving frontier models is expensive, so the companies doing it are well funded and hire in bursts. The specialists they need are rare, which pushes those firms to hire aggressively whenever they can. Lightcast, in its Beyond the Buzz report, tracked unique postings for generative AI skills rising from 55 in January 2021 to nearly 10,000 by May 2025, a surge absorbed disproportionately by the firms with the budgets to compete. The result is a market where a few employers set the pace.

What does concentration mean for jobseekers?
For jobseekers, concentration means the realistic search is narrower than a headline count of roles suggests, so targeting the active employers directly is worth the effort.
If a small set of companies drives most hiring, a scattered application strategy wastes effort. Learning which firms are active in your specialism, following them, and applying early when they open roles beats spraying applications across the whole market. It also means the health of a few employers has outsized influence on the job market, so a hiring slowdown at the big labs is felt more than the number of companies would imply.
There is a practical upside to concentration as well. A short list of active employers is easier to research thoroughly than a sprawling one. A focused candidate can read what each company builds, understand the problems they hire against, and tailor an application that speaks to their actual work rather than a generic pitch. For roles this scarce and competitive, that specificity is often what separates an interview from a rejection, and it is only possible because the real target list is small.
Is this likely to change?
AI hiring concentration is likely to ease slowly as adoption spreads into ordinary companies, but the frontier will stay concentrated for the foreseeable future.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 expects AI and information-processing technologies to be among the largest drivers of new roles this decade, which will pull hiring into more industries over time. As applied AI becomes routine in finance, healthcare, and operations, the employer base broadens. But the model-building frontier, where the highest-paid and most specialised roles sit, will remain the preserve of a small number of well-funded labs. For jobseekers, that suggests two distinct strategies over time: chase the frontier labs for the specialist roles, or follow AI as it spreads into ordinary companies where the competition is lighter and a domain background counts for more.
